Hudson's Schindler to place at state wrestling meet

Derek Schindler is wrapped around Manitowoc's Jonah Mrozinsky after getting a takedown.

MADISON - Derek Schindler earned himself a place on the awards podium at 182 pounds as he won his consolation semifinal match Friday afternoon at the WIAA State Wrestling Tournamnet at the Kohl Center.

Schindler opened up on Mrozinsky (41-10) in the third period as he scored both a takedown and a two-point nearfall for an 8-2 win.

Schindler (43-2) will wrestle again Saturday morning in placement matches. He'll face a defeated semifinal wrestler first off, either Mt. Horeb/Barneveld senior Quinn Faust (48-0) or Sheboygan North's Aaron Rothwell (45-0) then wrestle for either 3rd-6th place.

Schindler's Austin Koski was fortunate as he lost his consolation semifinal 9-3 to senior Mitch Benrez (34-7) of Hartland Arrowhead. Koski made a throw for a takedown to cut Benrez's lead to 6-3 in the third period but Benrez got an escape and takedown to seal the win. Koski's season ends with a 37-10 overall record.

Hudson has two semifinalists wrestling this evening, Dima Hawksford at 160 and Eliot Motu at 220 pounds.
