Packers ask Desmond Bishop to take a pay cut

Desmond Bishop appears to be on the chopping block for the Green Bay Packers. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says the team will either trade or release the veteran inside linebacker if they cannot get him to take a pay cut.

Bishop is in the third season of a four-year, $19-million contract. He's due to make almost $3.5 million dollars this year. He missed all of last season after hamstring surgery.

The Packers have reworked contracts for last year's final starters at inside linebacker - Brad Jones and A.J. Hawk.

Bishop tells the Journal Sentinel he's completely healthy after his surgery from a year ago. He said it's still possible that he'll be back with Green Bay, his only NFL team.

Four more practices

The Green Bay Packers have four more private practices before their summer break. Tuesday, the team held its final OTA workout that was open to fans and reporters.

Coach Mike McCarthy, who's starting his eighth season in Green Bay, says he's never seen the rookies mesh better with the veterans at this early stage. He said the team seems to have "a different edge ... a higher sense of urgency than I can recall."

The coach admitted that he didn't know how to measure it. "Maybe it's my higher sense of urgency," McCarthy said.

Both McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers have high words of praise for first-round defensive end Datone Jones. Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin expect to be deep in the competition at running back when training camp opens in late July.

Former Packer cut by Ravens

Former Packers fullback Vonta Leach has been cut by Baltimore. The Ravens said they could not work out a restructured deal for the 31-year-old Leach. He becomes the ninth departed Ravens player who started in the Super Bowl in February.

The Elias Sports Bureau said no Super Bowl champ has lost more than five starters the following season. Leach started his NFL career in Green Bay and played more than two seasons with the Packers.

He's a nine-year league veteran who has caught 112 passes for 749 yards and four touchdowns with the Packers, Houston and Baltimore.
