Wilgren and Gilson sign letters of intent

Two Hudson High School seniors signed national letters of intent in a ceremony at HHS Wednesday, Nov. 8

Kaitlyn Gilson will continue her athletic career in Division I gymnastics at Ohio State, while Anna Wilgren will head to Division II Minnesota State University-Mankato to play hockey.

Gilson, the daughter of Eric and Kathryn Gilson, began her early gymnastics training in 2005 at Hudson Gymnastics, with local coaches Hiwchul Kim, Seaok An, and Megan Lund. In 2011, Gilson started training at Twin City Twisters in Champlin, Minnesota, under Mike Unger and Sami Wozney.

Gilson was the all-around silver medalist and event champion on balance beam and uneven bars at the Level 9 JO Western National Championships in 2014, and a three-time competitor at Level 10 JO National Championships from 2015 - 2017, where she was a two-time medalist on balance beam.

Gilson plans to major in Political Science at Ohio State University, where she has committed to continue her gymnastics career on a full athletic scholarship.

Wilgren, a defenseman on the Raider girls hockey team who began skating when she was 3, emerged as the Raiders' top scorer in her rookie season, leading the BRC in scoring with 48 goals and 19 assists in 24 games.

She has tallied 158 goals and 63 assists for 221 points in her first three seasons as a Raider. She owns the school record in scoring, which she achieved with 64 goals and 20 assists for 84 points in 2016-17, according to Mankato State's website. She led the state of Wisconsin in goals scored and finished second in points in 2016-17, and she finished in the top three in points in three consecutive seasons.

She is a two-time First Team All-State selection, a three-time All-Big Rivers Conference selection and was she chosen as a Third Team All-USA selection in 2016-17.

Wilgren has won the Molly Engstrom Award, was an East Metro Girls Player of the Year finalist and a Jinelle Siergiej Award nominee, and has been named a Play in the Dells Athlete of the Week and a Pioneer Press Athlete of the Week. She was named Big Rivers Conference Co-Player of the Year for the 2015-16 season.

Wilgren, who her mother describes as a hard worker, is undecided in her major. She is the daughter Wayne and Karyn Wilgren.

Sarah J. Nigbor serves as a regional editor for RiverTown Multimedia, a position she began in April 2017. She joined RiverTown Multimedia in October 2013 as a news reporter for the New Richmond News, before being appointed editor of the Pierce County Herald in Febraury 2015. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Spanish and French in 2001. She completed a minor in journalism in 2004.
