Young Raider gymnasts crack top 20 at Wisconsin Rapids

The Raider gymnastics team finished their season on Saturday at the state meet in Wisconsin Rapids, with two performances cracking the top 20.

"We had three individuals competing Friday night during the individual qualifying round," said Coach Molly Dado. "I felt we ended strong during both the Friday and Saturday competitions."

Hudson was led by sophomore Paige Kazak, who was 20th on the balance beam with an 8.20, and the next nearest competitor was under eight. Kazak also was 20th in the floor exercise with an even higher tally, 8.75. She placed 22nd in the vault (8.567) and 23rd in the all around (33.317).

Other Raider scorers in Friday's individual competition were freshman Sarah Monette, 22nd on the beam with a 7.917 and 26th in the floor exercise with 8.417, and sophomore Sarah Erickson, 23rd on the uneven parallel bars with 8.267.

"Scoring was a little lower than we would have hoped, but all in all I believe we ended our season on a high note. Not all teams or individuals get the special opportunity to compete at the state level and it is definitely an honor to be a part of such an atmosphere," Dado said. "The competition brings the best of the best in the state and the competition is very high."

Hudson also scored ninth of 10 teams on Saturday with a 133.75, well ahead of Janesville Craig.

These were results from Saturday's team competition: On beam, Erickson, 8.567, Kazak, 8.367, Monette, 8.20, Melissa Stagg, 8.117 and Jenny Strom 8.017; in the floor exercise, Erickson, 8.517, Strom, 8.433, Monette 8.333, Stagg, 8.283 and Kazak, 8.00; on the vault, Hilary Feyereisen, 8.60, Kazak, 8.567, Stagg, 8.40, Erickson, 8.367 and Monette, 8.317; and on bars, Erickson, 8.333, Stagg, 8.317, Kazak, 8.183, Feyereisen, 8.167 and Brooke Rozenboom, 8.133.

"We are a very young team made up of all sophomores, except for one freshman and one senior," Dado said. "We do have hopes of setting our sights on the state meet in the future years to come."
