1988 Raider girls' trip to Madison was a first

It was 20 years ago this week that a Hudson High School girls basketball team won a trip to the state tournament in Madison for the first time in school history.

The 1988 Raiders were led by Martha Richards, who went on to have an outstanding career with the Stanford University women's team and now is the women's head golf coach at the University of Texas.

Cindy Singerhouse, Michelle Alberg, Tina Rieger, Tania Peterson, Donalee Johnson and Carolyn Kinney were other key members of the '88 squad coached by Dave Johnson.

The Raiders made it to Madison by defeating Stevens Point 60-51 in a Class A sectional final game at Medford. Richards led both teams with 25 points, according to a report in the March 10, 1988, Star-Observer.

Monroe defeated the Hudson girls 50-44 in the semi-finals of the state tournament held in the old University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse, located next to Camp Randall Stadium.

Hudson girls basketball teams went on to make six more trips to the state tournament under Johnson, whose 22 years as head coach of the Raiders came to a close near the end of the 2006-07 season.

The Raider girls also made it as far as the semi-finals of the state tournament in 1996 and 1997, before winning the Division 1 state championship in 1998.

They finished as runners-up to the state champions (Janesville Parker) in 2000 and won their second state championship trophy in 2002.

Three members of the first Raider girls basketball state tournament team still live in the area -- Tina Rieger, Cindy Singerhouse and Barb Kinney.

Donalee Johnson is a Prescott schoolteacher and coached the girls high school basketball team there for a few years.

Michelle Alberg and Heather (Horn) Midika reside in the St. Paul area, and Missy Laatsch is in Plymouth, Minn.

Tania (Peterson) McIntyre is living in Park City, Utah, and Carolyn Kinney is a resident of the state of Virginia.
