Distance runners, throwers weigh in, aid runner-up finish

The distance runners and weight throwers led the Raider boys track team to a second-place finish at the Old Abe Relays last Tuesday.

Good as that was, they almost returned from Eau Claire with a win.

Hudson was in a tight team finish near the top with 109 points, compared to just 112 for the winner, Arcadia. Menomonie was a distant third with 86.

The four-by-800 relay composed of all juniors - Adam Zais, Dan Schloesser, Neil Kivi and John Roberts - won their event by four seconds with an 8:44.16. Add Nick Duchow and take away Kivi and you have another winner, by more than ten seconds, in the distance medley of 4,000 meters with 11:06.37.

The four-by-1600 meter relay of freshman and juniors - Kivi, Roberts, Luke Wusterbarth and Matthew Rudquist - also won in 15:02.74. The 800 sprint medley by the same crew was second in 1:40.57.

The four-by-200 meter relay of freshmen and sophomores - Brody Swenson, Tyler Smith, Nathan Smits and Nick Lund was a runner-up in 1:35.53.

Swenson placed in a tie for second in the high jump with a six-foot effort and was followed in a tie for sixth by both Ben Wilen and Josh Robers. In a tie for third in the pole vault were Mitch Patrick and Julian McNally.

Ludgatis was second in the shot put and also easily in the discus, with 46.5 feet and 149.5 feet, and Dave Ehlert and Sean O'Keefe followed that by throwing fourth and fifth in the shot. O'Keefe was also fourth in the discus and Tuma chimed in with a seventh.

Jenish Bhakta was fourth in the long jump, Smits was fourth in the 110 hurdles and ninth in the 300 hurdles, the four-by-400 relay of Duchow, Mackenzie Lund, Nick Lund and Nicholas Cadwallader took fourth, and the four-by-100 relay of Mike Tuma, Ludgatis, O'Keefe and Alexander Meincke placed fifth.

Both the varsity meet scheduled for last Saturday in River Falls and the JV meet scheduled for last Friday in New Richmond were cancelled due to rain and snow.

The next scheduled action for the JV team is tonight (May 1) at the Eau Claire Memorial Invite, while the varsity team travels to the Rochester True Team event this coming Saturday, May 3rd. Events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
