Raider girls thinclads beat wind and all but Rochester Mayo
The Raider girls track team couldn't quite pass the Mayo at the Rochester True Team meet on Saturday, but they creamed everybody else.
Rochester Mayo won the meet with 613 points, and Hudson was the equivalency of one placing behind with a 607, well ahead of powerful Rochester John Marshall with 553, and even farther outdistancing the rest of the field.
"The windy conditions made for some gutsy, gusty performances," Coach Jami Holum said.
Katie Cumming broke meet records in the 1600 and 3200 meters and was named Girls Track Athlete of the Meet.
Both four-by-100 and four-by-200 relays placed first, Rachael Saathoff won a very competitive 100 meters, Sydney Malanaphy ran a strong 300 hurdles against a hard wind, and Cori Vought posted an exciting performance in the 1600 meter Steeple Chase -- not a typical high school event.
Holum added that Haley Fletcher had an outstanding field-event day with first in long jump, second in high jump and fourth in triple jump, and that Hilary Feyereisen continued her winning streak with a pole-vault victory on a challenging day.
In the two throwing events, Raider athletes scored 98 of the teams 607 total points -- gaining first, second and fourth in the shot and second, third and fourth in the discus.
"Overall the girls were runner-up to Rochester Mayo by six points on a day that was great to get in. The girls were once again short a few team members due to other commitments, and that meant the difference in the team race, but it was tremendous to get a meet in for the athletes," Holum said. "So many other teams in the area have had events cancelled due to the weather. It was terrific to get this one in the books and the girls did a great job."
Hudson is now in preparation for the Big Rivers Conference meets. "We cannot wait. This year's conference meet will be very competitive on the girl's side, with most of the teams within striking distance for the title," Holum said, adding that the Raiders will try to make it four league titles in a row.
Thursday, May 8, brings the Hudson Junior Varsity Invitational, starting at 4 p.m. at Newton Field. Next Tuesday, May 13, is the Big Rivers Conference Meet at Eau Claire North, which begins with field events at 3:30 p.m. and running events at 4:15 p.m.
