Pitchers lead way, including a no-hitter, for three wins

The Raider softball team used strong pitching and made the most of its runs to win three games last week.

Hudson won game one against Menomonie 2-0 and also took game two 2-1 in nine innings. They also beat New Richmond with a more handy offense, by a 5-3 score.

Brit Krieg threw her second no-hitter of the year in the opener, along with 15 strikeouts and two walks. Kristen Feisel had an RBI single -- one of Hudson's seven hits coming from all of the first seven spots in the order -- in the first inning and Maddie Karras also knocked in a run, hers in the fifth inning.

Amy Frye made a great running catch in the left-center gap in the bottom of the sixth with a runner on to preserve the no-hitter and shutout, and she did much the same thing in the second game for an encore.

In game two, each team scored an unearned run in the first inning, and then both squads were held scoreless until the bottom of the ninth, when Sammy Peterson had a walk-off hit for the Raiders.

Chelsey Walzcak thwarted a Menomonie rally in the fifth by throwing out a Menomonie baserunner, and Meagan Hennekens had a game-saving catch at the fence. Feisel chucked five strong innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits, with five strikeouts. Krieg got the win in relief by throwing four innings of one-hit ball, and fanning five.

Hudson defeated a very good New Richmond team for the second time in seven days, helped by Arika Krike going 3-for-3 with a 2-RBI triple and Abby Singerhouse going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Krieg got the win by giving up only one earned run on five hits, with 10 strikeouts and two walks, as Hudson's record improved to 9-4. It rapped nine hits and had two-run innings in the second and fourth.

The Raiders are scheduled to travel to Rice Lake for a doubleheader on Monday, to host a doubleheader against Eau Claire Memorial on Tuesday, then play in the Wausau West Invitational on Saturday, with their first game at 11 a.m. against Park Falls.
