Open gyms on again for Booster softball

The Hudson Booster softball programs will again sponsor pre-season clinics and open gymnasiums starting Sunday, Jan. 18, at Willow River Elementary and St. Patrick's schools.

These sessions are for all Booster softball players from ages 9-18, including 8-year-olds who will be 9 by Aug. 31. Each session offers an opportunity to learn and practice hitting, fielding, pitching, catching and base-running skills. Parents and coaches are also encouraged to attend.

These clinics are called beneficial for all girls, including those experiencing pitching for the first time, girls who will be playing in the recreational program, players interested in being on one of the recreational tournament teams, those players considering trying out for the Boosters' competitive program, and girls who just want to learn more about softball to improve their skill and enjoyment.

The cost is $5 per Sunday for each girl, and an injury waiver must be signed by a parent or guardian. Due to the popularity of these clinics, some sessions may fill up. Admission is on a first-come basis.

On various Sundays there are special pitching coaches available for more private tutoring. There is an additional cost to participate in these sessions. The $5 fee is to cover the cost of gym rental. The Boosters are not using this as a fund-raiser.

The clinics will be run on these Sundays: Jan. 18, Jan. 25, Feb. 8, Feb. 15, Feb. 22, March 15, March 22 and March 29. There are no clinics on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1, and during spring break, March 1 and March 8.

The time slots at Willow River -- hitting, fielding and base-running -- will be broken up as follows: 4-5:30 p.m. for 9-10 year olds, including athletes who will be 9 by Aug. 31; 5:30-7 p.m. for 11-12 year olds; and 7-8 p.m. for 13-18-year-olds.

The time slots at St. Patrick's school -- pitchers and catchers -- will be as follows: 4:15-5:15 p.m. for 11-12 year olds; 5:45-6:45 p.m. for 9-10 year olds; and 5:45-6:45 p.m. for 13-18 year olds.

Girls who are either pitchers or catchers are encouraged to attend both the Willow River and St. Patrick's sessions. For safety issues, girls participating in both sessions will be escorted between the gyms.

Any girl who can't attend the session for her age is encouraged to attend any session that works out.
