The Raider girls soccer team finally got outside for a practice Monday. That gave it three days to prepare for its first game of the season.

The Raiders kick off the 2009 campaign Thursday, April 2 at 4:30 p.m. at New Richmond. They open Big Rivers Conference play Tuesday, April 7, at Menomonie, and host River Falls under the lights in their home opener Thursday, April 9, at the new middle school field.

Head coach Josh Pettit said the players are ready to go.

"We have a good mixture of returning and new players," he said. "Last year we were pretty average in the BRC, and this year I hope that we work hard every game and we are competitive with any team in our conference."

Senior co-captains Katy Tantalean and Jen Millin return along with 2008 All-BRC first team pick Megan Claflin, now a junior, and honorable mention selection Paige Ommen, a sophomore.

Other returning letterwinners include senior Jessica Sutmar and juniors Bri Elliot, Katy Schulte and Natalie Anderson.

Pettit said the key to the team's success this season will come down to how hard it works in practice.

"We have the potential to be a very good team," he said. "I see the BRC this year very competitive; each year every team gets better, you cannot take one team or one game lightly."
