Derek Schindler was just looking for something to do when he started wrestling as a fifth grader with Hudson Youth Wrestling.

When he reached sixth grade he joined the middle school wrestling team, and this past season as an eighth grader he posted an impressive record of 43-5.

But Schindler solidified his position as a future Raider to watch when he took third place at the ASICS USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals in Cedar Falls, Iowa April 3-5. The outcome earned him USA Wrestling All-American honors.

Schindler wasn't the only Hudson wrestler to compete at the national tournament. He traveled to Iowa with middle school teammate Sawyer Massie. Raider senior and 2009 WIAA state heavyweight champion Cole Tobin also competed and placed first to earn All-American honors.

Schindler, who wrestled at 105 pounds when he first hit the mat as a fifth grader, wrestled at 160 pounds at nationals. After losing his opening match, he came back to win five straight to capture third place in a bracket that included wrestlers from Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

He took second at this year's regional tournament in River Falls before moving on to nationals.

Derek, who turned 14 on April 21, is the oldest son of Doug and Sue Schindler of Hudson. His brother Isac, 10, saw his wrestling season come to an end when he broke his foot the day of the regional wrestling tournament. The pair also has a younger sister Sara, 8, and a younger brother Bryce, 4.
