Former HHS wrestler opens 'Mat' school

Former HHS wrestler Scott Hawkins saw a need to help young wrestlers in the area.

That led Hawkins to open Mat Champ School of Wrestling.

The wrestling school has scheduled classes from October through December at the Dance Explosion studio in New Richmond.

Hawkins, a realtor, wrestled on the varsity team at Hudson High School from 1983-85. He has lived in New Richmond for seven years.

Hawkins came up with the idea of opening a wrestling school after helping his girlfriend's 5-year-old son at youth wrestling tournaments last winter.

"There's 100s of little kids at these tournaments and they don't have an understanding of the basics," Hawkins said.

Setting out to teach the basics is Hawkins' main objective. He will run two sessions. Wrestlers ages 10-14 will meet on Fridays from 5-8 p.m. Wrestlers ages 5-9 will meet on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. The classes begin in the first week of October and will have eight sessions, running through mid-December.

"My philosophy is I want to teach more than the moves. I want to teach the discipline of wrestling," Hawkins said.

He said there will be a focus on stretching, exercise and conditioning. He will teach scoring, basic moves from the top, bottom and stand-up positions, and will teach rules and regulations. He wanted classes to be three hours so the wrestlers will get enough repetitions to gain a working knowledge of what they are taught.
