Eau Claire/Altoona Stars end girls' skaters' season

The Raider girls' hockey team stayed close to the third-ranked and Big Rivers Conference champion Eau Claire/Altoona Stars through most of two periods in their first-round playoff game last Thursday, Feb. 16 in Eau Claire, but the Raiders came up on the short end of a 6-2 decision.

The Stars opened the scoring three minutes into the game on a goal by Gabby Curtis. Five minutes later, Hudson senior captain Alex Willi stole the puck from a Stars defender behind the ECA goalie and put it on the stick of a waiting Sydney Squires who top-shelved her shot past ECA goalie Jordyn Bunce to tie the score.

At the ten-minute mark of the first period, Willi poke-checked the puck away from a Stars forward and Squires corralled the puck. She found Racheal Knoke wide open in the offensive zone and Knoke scored, giving the Raiders a 2-1 lead after one period.

The Stars' Haley Watkins scored a power play goal halfway through the second period and ECA scored two goals in thirty seconds toward the end of the second to put the Stars up 4-2 after two periods. Emily Lester scored two insurance goals in the third period, ending the Raiders season with a 6-12-2 record.

Nali Mullan tallied 31 saves for Hudson.

The Stars advanced to face the St. Croix Valley Fusion in a sectional semifinal game this past Tuesday in Baldwin.
