Golfers set to tee off at Troy Burne

Following conference, regional and sectional titles, and a fourth place finish at the 2011 WIAA State Golf Tournament, the Raider boys' golf team is geared up and excited about its prospects for 2012.

The Raider varsity opens its season by hosting the Hudson Invitational Monday, April 9, at Troy Burne Golf Club beginning at 9 a.m. The Raiders won the season-opening tournament last year.

The following Monday, April 16, the varsity will travel to Tartan for a 14-team invitational.

Despite losing four seniors to graduation, head coach Bill Schaub remains optimistic thanks to a strong crop of junior varsity players.

Schaub said senior Ben Lewis will use his experience and course knowledge to lead the varsity this season. Other seniors vying for spots are Brody Belland, David Kein, Jordan DeLao, Pat Bowers and Jake Quade, while juniors Thor Hanson and Derek Omman are also going to be in the mix. Several freshmen that are showing promise, according to Schaub, are Joey Griese and Mitch Simonet.

"These two players came in with summer tournament experience and are looking very good," the coach said. "Freshman Patrick Fisher also has had a good spring so far as the team tries to sort out the positions on the roster to begin the year."

The Raiders are looking for their third straight Big Rivers Conference title this season. Schaub said River Falls brings a strong team back from last year along with Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire North.
