Softball splits with UW-Eau Claire, Stevens Point

The UW-River Falls softball team opened WIAC play by splitting a pair of doubleheaders with UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stevens Point last week.

Wednesday at Ramer Field, the Falcons defeated Eau Claire, 9-4, before losing, 3-0. Friday at Stevens Point, UWRF dropped the opener, 2-1, before winning the nightcap, 7-3.

In the first game against Eau Claire last Wednesday, catcher Patty Olson hit two home runs and pitcher Rose Tusa retired 11 of the last 16 batters she faced in a 9-4 UWRF victory. Olson went 3-for-3 with a double in the nightcap but the Falcons couldn't push a run across in the 3-0 defeat.

Friday at Stevens Point, Tusa struck out 11 and allowed just two earned runs but the Falcons came out on the short end of a 2-1 decision. In the nightcap, Abbie Morris and Ashley Goettl each went deep in a 7-3 Falcon victory.

The Falcons, now 13-8 overall, 2-2 in the WIAC, play a nonconference doubleheader at Bethel Thursday, April 12, before returning home to host UW-Superior for two games on Alumni Day, Saturday, April 14, beginning at noon at Ramer Field.

Becky Ponick sets UWRF javelin mark

Senior Becky Ponick set a UWRF school record in the javelin as the Falcon track and field teams opened the 2012 outdoor season last Thursday with a dual meet against UW-Stout at Ramer Field.

Ponick won the event with a throw of 136-feet, 6-inches, breaking the record of 133-8 set by Vicki Copper in 2008.

UWRF's women posted four other first places in the meet. Kayla Hillman won the pole vault with a leap of 10-5 1/2, Katie Rydeen of Osceola won the 1500 meter run in 4 minutes, 51.87 seconds, and Alyssa Rasmussen took first in both the 100 meter dash (12.48 seconds) and 200 meter dash (25.06).

In the men's competition, Mike Sandle won the 200 meter dash in 22.26 seconds and Paul Schreiner won the 400 meter race in 50.42 seconds. Stillwater native Michael Woodward was a double winner, placing first in the high jump (6-2) and triple jump (45-5 3/4). Benjamin Tykwinski won the shot put with a toss of 48-1 1/4.

The Falcons will next host the Falcon Invitational this Friday and Saturday, April 13-14, at Ramer Field.
