Raider swimmers are sectional meet runner-ups

Devin Cicha won two individual titles, Erika Guenther claimed one, and both teamed up with Abby Duerst and Emmie Reynolds for the 400 freestyle relay championship at the WIAA Division 1 Sectional Meet last Saturday at the Hudson Middle School pool.

On the day, the Raiders qualified three individuals in five events and a pair of relay teams for this Saturday’s WIAA State Championships in Madison.

Hudson finished second at the 13-team sectional with a score of 320. Wausau East took first with 329.

Cicha won sectional titles in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.58 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 53.5. Guenther’s title came in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 11.27 seconds. She also took second in the 100 backstroke in 59.6 seconds to earn a berth at state.

Duerst, Reynolds, Guenther and Cicha teamed up for a sectional championship time of 3:38.9 in the 400 freestyle relay, while Guenther, Natalie Wood, Cicha and Reynolds qualified for state in the 200 medley relay with a second place time of 1:52.30. Wausau East was first in 1:52.13.

Sophomore diver Maddie Nelson also advanced to the state meet with a third place score of 345.3. Claire VanValkenburg finished fifth with 322.7 while Madison Rohde was sixth with 317.15.

Reynolds just missed earning a trip to state in the 200 freestyle with a second place time of 2:02.92 and finished third in the 500 free in 5:29.57. Wood finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.52 and eighth in the 100 free in 57.57.

Nicole Berdusco, Ellie Kiecker, Duerst and Wood combined for a fifth place time of 1:45.31 in the 200 freestyle relay.

The WIAA Division 1 State Championships will be held this Saturday at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison. Diving competition will begin at 10 a.m. with swimming at 3 p.m.
