Hockey: Boys surge past Mustangs
The top-ranked Raider boys hockey team erupted for five goals in a seven-minute span late in the second period to snap a 2-2 tie on their way to an 8-2 victory over Menomonie in a Big Rivers Conference game at Gornick Arena Thursday, Dec. 14.
The win kept the Raiders undefeated at 6-0 overall and on top of the BRC standings with a mark of 3-0. They visited Rice Lake this past Tuesday, Dec.19, before opening Schwan's Cup play Tuesday, Dec. 26, against St. Paul Academy at the Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine.
The Raiders will compete in the Bronze Division at the prestigious holiday tournament along with St. Paul Academy, Rogers, Mankato East, Minnehaha Academy, Northfield, Spring Lake Park and Bloomington Kennedy.
Last Thursday against Menomonie, the Mustangs scored late in the first period and early in the second to tie the score, 2-2, before the Raider offense woke up.
Jordan Halverson put Hudson up for good with a power play goal at the 9:17 mark of the second period to open the floodgates.
Harvey Dove followed with a goal less than a minute later and Kolton Prater scored at 12:53 before Ben Lundeen scored his second goal of the game at the 13:14 mark. Hunter Danielson found the back of the net with 36 seconds left in the period to extend Hudson's lead to 7-2.
With the running clock in play, Cole Danielson made the final goal 4:53 into the third period.
Halverson and Cole Danielson each recorded four point nights with a goal and three assists each while Lundeen had two goals and one assist and Jack Flattum had a goal and two assists. Dove added an assist to go with his second period goal and Grady Gornick had a pair of assists while Griffin Gornick earned one helper.
The Raiders outshot the Mustangs 45-11 with Jack Klementz and Alex Cohen splitting time in net for Hudson.
