Hunter safety offered in Somerset

Young people in the St. Croix Valley area interested in hunting and recreational shooting are invited to enroll in a certified Wisconsin Hunter Education course to be held at the Somerset Middle School. Interested students should be 12 years old. Parents are also welcome to enroll in this course with their son or daughter.

All students are required to obtain a Wisconsin DNR customer identification number as part of the course graduation criteria and students must provide this number to the instructors during registration. Students may obtain a number by calling (888) 936-7463 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. or by visiting the DNR Service Center in Baldwin.

Registration is Tuesday, April 6 only. Classes are every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. beginning April 6 and ending Thursday, May 13. The cost is $10. A parent or legal guardian is required to attend registration and orientation night with any minor student to sign the state required enrollment forms. A person does not need to be a Wisconsin resident to enroll in this course. Class size will be limited to 50 students; first in line, first registered. Pre-registration is not offered. Field Day is Saturday, May 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Any parent who would like to enroll a child with special needs is asked to call the lead instructor at least two weeks in advance of the course start date in order to arrange for special needs accommodations.

The course is taught by Department of Natural Resources certified Hunter Education Instructors and sponsored by the Somerset area Teaching Team.
