By the time Alex Weaver and John Cooper Ramthun swept the top two spots in the 100 yard backstroke in the Raider boys swimming and diving team's season opener against Chippewa Falls Tuesday, Nov. 28, the outcome had long been decided.
Hudson had taken first place in every event, including the top two spots in five races on its way to a dominating 123-55 victory that included the final two events of the night running as exhibitions. Six different Raiders earned first place finishes while Hudson swept the relay events.
Erik Small won two individual events-- the 200 freestyle with a time of 1 minutes, 55.05 seconds, and the 100 butterfly in 56.49, while teaming up with Alex Weaver, Ethan Hanson, and Steven Asmus for a first place time of 1:47.25 in the 200 medley relay.
Asmus won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5 minutes flat and finished second to Small in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.34, while Weaver won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.04 and Ramthun was second in 1:03.17. Ramthun also took first in the 100 freestyle in 52.24 seconds and Weaver was second in the 100 butterfly in 57.08.
Adam Berdusco won the 200 individual medley in 2:14.12 and Hanson was second in 2:18.64, while Eric Wanken took first in the 50 free in 25.12 seconds and Jacob Krusell was second in 25.16.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Hanson, Wanken, Jonathan Bennett and Ramthun teamed up for a first place time of 1:40.36.
Saturday, Dec. 2, the Raiders traveled to the Sun Prairie Invitational and came home with a sixth place finish in the 11-team field. Hudson finished with 161 points to beat seventh place Eau Claire Alliance (151) for the first time. Madison Memorial won the team title with 512.
Asmus had Hudson's highest finish of the day, cutting nearly five seconds off his 500 freestyle from earlier in the week to place second in 4:55.71.
Small had a pair of top ten finishes, placing fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.87 and seventh in the 100 butterfly in 55.93 seconds. Asmus was sixth in the 200 free in 1:52.5.
Hanson finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.01, and Weaver placed 10th in the 200 IM in 2:08.79.
Two Raider relay teams also earned top ten finishes. The 400 freestyle team of Asmus, Weaver, Ramthun and Small finished sixth in 3:28.25, and the 200 medley team of Asmus, Hanson, Weaver and Small, was eighth in 1:46.35.
The Raiders will host Watertown-Mayer in a dual meet this Friday, Dec. 8, at 6:30 p.m. and Tartan Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. at the middle school pool.
