Day by Day: Head in the clouds takes some getting used to
I had thought the day when I found myself in a cloud, I would be dead, resting in peace somewhere. Instead here I am working in one every day -- just wishing I was. It happened a couple of months back. The Star-Observer is being created in "the cloud," or at least I think it is....

Margaret's Musings: The rule of law?
You never know what might come across your path. On a recent trip to visit family and friends these are some of the statements that were made: "The Koch Brothers are evil. They are Nazis."; "Our government is two hundred years old.

Randy's Ramblings: Grifter takes advantage of people's generosity
I'd rather report the news than be a part of it. Nevertheless, the line got blurred for me on Wednesday of last week. After the morning staff meeting to semi-plan this week's Star-Observer, I stopped by the Walmart store to pick up a few items from the shopping list on our refrigerator...

DAY BY DAY: The time has come to talk openly about suicide
Over my 23 years as a reporter for the Star-Observer, I have told some pretty sad stories that have involved our families, friends and neighbors. They have included the loss of loved ones from disease, accidents, natural causes and even criminal acts. It is always difficult to tell...

DAY BY DAY: Age, wisdom and a whole host of other myths wasting on the young
What a difference a year can make. When I turned 60 last April, it was hard on me. I usually don't mind birthdays but that one made me think about what it would be like to be young -- well at least younger. But here I am a year later now wishing I was 64, about to be 65, and done...

Margaret's Musings: Breaking the silence -- what does OFA mean to you?
Remember when politics was fun and friends could banter back and forth civilly? Over the last two years you have followed me on a discovery journey. Completely lost is my naïve attitude that all is right with the world as long as one simply votes. I find that, given the opportunity...

Doug's Diggings: Stupidity injury offers teachable moment
I suffered a stupidity injury on Valentine's Day. I somehow got into a fight with my snow blower -- guess who won. The result was an injured finger and a three-hour stint in the emergency room at Hudson Hospital on Valentine's evening. The reason I consider it a stupidity...
