What started as a vehicle fire Thursday afternoon quickly grew and destroyed a pole barn in Somerset Township. Travis Belisle, Somerset Fire/Rescue chief, said the call came in around 4:40 p.m.
Jeremy Gillis, 22, of New Richmond was found floating in the Willow River the morning of Dec. 6. St. Croix County deputies responded to reports of a one-vehicle crash in Erin Prairie at about 6:30 a.m., about a quarter mile west of County Road T on County Road K.
Supporters of a new St. Croix River Crossing today launched a broad-based, community-supported coalition to advocate for the construction of a new four-lane bridge. The proposed St. Croix River Crossing would replace the 80-year-old Stillwater Lift Bridge, which Stillwater, Minn. Mayor Ken Harycki calls a fracture-critical structure. Harycki is co-chairman of the new coalition. The group gathered today in Lowell Park in Stillwater to discuss the coalitions motives. "We're here for one reason," Harycki said.
The Stillwater Lift Bridge is now closed. The Minnesota Department of Transportation closed both directions of the bridge at 9 a.m. this morning under the watchful eye of about 10 spectators. Officials close the bridge when the water reaches 86.2 feet. The river is currently at 86.45 feet in Stillwater, Minn. It's unknown when the bridge will open again. MnDot officials suggest commuters take alternative routes at Highway 243 south at Osceola or Interstate 94 at Hudson. For real-time travel information anywhere in Minnesota visit 511mn.org.
When Jozie Lewis was born with severely swollen hands and feet, her doctors thought it was just because of the way she was positioned in the womb. Derek and Linda Lewis, Jozie's parents, weren't so sure. "My brother's step-son's nephew's daughter has Turner syndrome," Linda said. "When I asked the doctor if that's what it was, his jaw dropped open." Not many people know about Turner syndrome, Lewis said.
Roughly 20 people dove into Perch Lake on June 20 to help rid the beach of Eurasian milfoil. The scuba divers, organized by Terry Nooner, owner of St. Croix Scuba in Hudson, pull weeds three times a year in an effort to control the aquatic plant. "They don't use any chemicals in the lake so this is really the only way to control it," Nooner said. Eurasian milfoil was introduced to Perch Lake at the boat launch, Nooner said. It grows several feet tall and during the winter months lays flat along the lake floor.
