Daryl Standafer won a second consecutive term to chair the St. Croix County Board and a new group was sworn into office Tuesday morning April 17 including 12 new supervisors. Meals for senior citizens at nutrition sites and home delivery in St. Croix County topped 49,000 in 2011, out pacing the 2010 figures by nearly 2,000. The number of meals provided through the Aging and Disability's Resource Center has been on the rise over the last several years. Randi Hanson, the chipper nutrition program coordinator, couldn't be more enthusiastic about the overall success of the senior nutrition operation. "Programs like this help keep seniors in their homes and independent," she said during a conversation at the Government Center in Hudson.
Thanks to some footwork by local hobbyists, negotiations and public support, Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill April 2 that allows home brewers to transport their wares off the premises. The result is good news for Mike Fredricksen, 40, Hudson, an 18-year veteran home brewer and member of the Wisconsin Alliance of Home Brewers who was deeply involved in pushing the bill (Senate Bill 395) along its legislative path. "I am happy for the outcome," Fredricksen said in a telephone conversation Monday.
Beth Pabst, register of deeds, urges property owners in St. Croix County to take advantage of a free service that could alert them to fraud. Pabst's office has teamed with Fidlar Technologies to create the Property Fraud Alert system. It is a free service to property owners.
To say Tom Marson has a gargantuan love of flying is probably a gross understatement. By his own admission he built his first model airplane at age 10 or 11. At age 12 he rejoiced over the early morning news on the radio that Jimmy Doolittle had bombed Tokyo with a group of B-25s flown off an aircraft carrier deck in the Pacific during World War II. Even when he met his wife, Mercedes, "Mercy", while serving with the U.S.
There is nothing quite like a trip to the Holy Land to boost the spiritual awakening of Christians as Easter approaches. And so it was for 16 members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hudson who traveled to Israel in February and visited a number of places mentioned in the Bible. Pastor Tim Booth and Dawn Sauceman, ministry associate, took time last week to recall the experience. "It completely brought the Bible to life.
For people in St. Croix and Pierce counties with mental health issues or those of a family member, there is cost-free help from a local organization. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a grass roots mental health organization committed to building hope for all those in need. "The St. Croix Valley affiliate offers crisis intervention team training, family education, peer-to-peer and support group programs," said Denis Hackel, co-president along with Patricia Cederholm, of the local organization. "There are 30 to 40 members of the St.
Traffic along Interstate 94 from Wisconsin to Minnesota and vice versa is experiencing a steady increase in volume as population spikes on both sides of the St. Croix River. Moving people efficiently along the Gateway Corridor has been under study by the Gateway Commission in Minnesota since 2009. Wisconsin joined the party in 2010, said Tim Ramberg, St. Croix County highway commissioner. Ramberg presented basics of the study during the March 6 County Board meeting along with a slide show and mountain of statistics.
The planning and zoning department is on a continuing mission to locate all the septic systems in St. Croix County and log them in a data base. Pam Quinn, zoning specialist, and Ryan Yarrington, zoning technician, are charged with the task for the department and reminding citizens that septic tanks should be inspected and/or pumped a minimum of every three years. The mission is not the whimsy of a local bureaucrat or politician, however. Finding and informing the owners of all the sewer systems in the countryside is mandated by state statute that was enacted in 2008.
