With Congress poised to vote soon on a proposed bridge to be built over the St. Croix river near Stillwater, Minn., 30 state legislators from Minnesota and Wisconsin sent a letter to their respective congressional delegations urging they vote no. A Michigan semi- driver and her passenger have been indentified as the victims of a three-truck crash which occurred late Wednesday morning on I-94, about 20 miles south of Eau Claire. Clara Lee-Ann Wonsowicz, 47, of Brighton, Mich., was the driver of a westbound Werner Transport semi that crossed the median and struck two other semi units traveling eastbound, the State Patrol said. Both Wonsowicz and her 46-year-old passenger, Thomas John-Scott Brown from Ypsilanti, were pronounced dead at the scene. The St. Croix Underage Drinking Coalition completed a wave of compliance checks in several municipalities in St. Croix County on Sept. 30. This round of checks marks the seventh year of compliance investigations by the coalition. Of the establishments checked in September, 83 percent passed by not serving alcohol to minors. Some 17 percent of establishments checked failed the compliance check. A compliance check is a tool to identify alcohol establishments that sell alcohol to underage youth.

The U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources today (Wednesday, Oct. 5) held a hearing to review and amend the legislation which would allow the St. Croix River Crossing to move forward. On a bi-partisan vote of 30-14, the legislation was amended so that the House version of the bill now matches the language of the U.S. Senate bill. A woman from New Richmond was killed and two men -- one from River Falls and one from Prescott -- were injured in an accident that occurred in the Bass Lake area south of Somerset Tuesday morning. Dawn Anderson, 37, New Richmond, was pronounced dead at the scene by a St. Croix County medical examiner. Thomas E. Local supporters of a new St. Croix River crossing near Stillwater traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with congressional members and lobby for speedy passage of a bill that would clear the way for the span to be constructed. On Monday, Aug. 29, at approximately 7:30 p.m. the Roberts Police Department responded to an incident that occurred in the 200 block of West Warren Street. According to the complainant an unknown male traveling east on Warren Street rode past a group of individuals and brandished a firearm. The suspect was riding a black and silver sport type motorcycle with an unknown license plate number, and was dressed in black leather. The police department is asking for the public's assistance in providing any information that would help identify the suspect.
