A majority of folks in far western Wisconsin overwhelmingly believe that the state should actively develop and promote alternative fuels. In fact 86 percent think state support for alternative fuels is a good idea compared to just 14 percent opposed. Bringing back the death penalty in the state is also supported by a majority of residents in the area with 59 percent in support of the death penalty and 41 percent opposed. These are some of the results from the annual poll done by Sen. Sheila Harsdorf, R-River Falls who represents the 10th State Senate District.
The Elections Board will reconsider its decision to let people register to vote using the last four digits of their Social Security numbers. The Board voted earlier this year to offer the option to people who don't bring their drivers' licenses to the polls. The policy has come under fire from Republican lawmakers who say it violates federal law. The U.S.
Secretary of State candidate Scott Ross will make a campaign stop at the Coachman Supper Club in Baldwin at the St. Croix County Democratic Party meeting Thursday, July 13, at 7 p.m. Ross is running against 28-year incumbent Douglas LaFollette. Ross said he is campaigning to return the secretary of state position back to its watchdog roots of overseeing the election process. He pledges he will make sure everyone who has the right to vote gets to vote. He recently won a straw poll at the Democratic convention in La Crosse.
Edward E. ('Mud Cat') Smith, of New Richmond and formerly of Hudson, died Friday, Aug. 28, 2009 at Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, Minn. He was 64. He was born the son of Ernest and Crystal (Brunner) Smith on Oct.
Quentin John Weinzierl, age 85 of Somerset and formerly of Houlton, Wis., died peacefully on Sunday, August 9, 2009 at the St. Croix Health Center. Quentin was born on August 16, 1923 at his home in Clam Falls, Wis. His parents were Christian and Elizabeth (Logelin) Weinzierl. He attended Union Free High School in Frederic, Wis., graduating in 1941. He served proudly for the United States Army from 1948 to 1953. He married Jean Marie Walker on Dec. 12, 1953 in Pine City, Minn. Quentin was a pipe fitter with Local Union 455.
Vivian Afdahl, age 92 of Baldwin, died August 2, 2009 at the Baldwin Care Center. Funeral service 11 a.m. Thursday, August 6 at Peace Lutheran Church in Baldwin with Pastor John Hanson officiating. Burial in the Woodside Cemetery in Baldwin. Visitation one hour prior to the service at church on Thursday. Memorials preferred to Peace Lutheran Church in her memory.
Phyllis P. Annis, age 84 of New Richmond, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2009 after complications from heart surgery at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. Funeral service Thursday, July 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in New Richmond. Visitation also be Thursday from 10-11 a.m. before the service at the church. Interment Friday, July 24 at 11 a.m. at McKinley Cemetery in the town of McKinley, Wis. Arrangements are with Beebe Mortuary of New Richmond.
Mildred Elaine Hop, age 84 of Baldwin, Wis., and formerly of New Richmond, Wis., died on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at the Baldwin Care Center. Funeral services at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 17 at the First Baptist Church, 341 North Shore Drive, New Richmond. Visitation one hour prior to services at the church, and also from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday evening at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin. Burial at the Baldwin Cemetery. Viola Evjen, age 94 of Baldwin, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the Baldwin Area Medical Center. Funeral service was 11 a.m. Friday, July 3 at Peace Lutheran Church in Baldwin. Burial was in the Woodside Cemetery of rural Baldwin. Visitation was held on Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at the O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin and one hour prior to the service at church on Friday. Memorials preferred.
Eugene Fern, age 81 of Baldwin, Wis., died on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Woodwinds Hospital in Woodbury, Minn.
