For the fifth and final year, western Wisconsin volunteers last week headed out to local lakes to corral and band trumpeter swans. The banding effort was part of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources endangered species tracking effort. One man is hospitalized following an ultra-light crash at New Richmond Regional Airport Thursday morning, Sept. 13. The New Richmond Police Department, New Richmond Fire and Rescue and New Richmond EMS, along with the St. Croix County Sheriff's office, were dispatched to the shore of Hatfield Lake at about 10 a.m. Thursday. According to Airport Manager Mike Demulling, it appears an ultra-light was attempting to take off from the airport when it failed to gain enough power and crashed into the brush along the shore of the lake. The pilot, Gene Jensen of Hudson, was injured in the crash.
The motorcyclist who died following a Friday morning crash along Interstate 94, five miles west of Menomonie, has been identified as Scott A. Quist, 50, of Dorchester. According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, the crash occurred at about 9:40 a.m. Friday, and may have been linked to a rain shower that passed through the area minutes earlier. Quist was not wearing a helmet. The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating and further information will be provided as it becomes available.
With a light agenda, the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors made quick work of its regular meeting Tuesday morning. Only two resolutions were on the table. First the board passed a measure giving the OK to an application for a 2013 County Conservation Aids Grant by a 16-0 margin. Tim Hood, David Peterson and Ron Kiesler were absent. The St. Croix County Sportsman's Alliance is seeking the grant for a small parking lot in the town of Kinnickinnic near the Kinnickinnic River for greater public access for fishing.
A motorcyclist died as the result of injuries from an accident Sunday night, Sept. 2, near Hammond. According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, law enforcement officials were dispatched to the scene along County Road E near 103rd Street at about 10:05 p.m. in St. Croix County. The name of the motorcyclist was released later on Monday.
MADISON - A confirmed case of equine encephalitis in a Polk County horse has state health authorities advising horse owners to get their animals vacinated and take steps to minimize their animals' exposure to mosquitoes. Blood samples from a quarter horse were submitted to Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory on Aug. 30 and confirmed Friday. Dr. Robert Ehlenfeldt, the state veterinarian, issued a warning Aug.
In an effort to help with the financial burden four New Richmond families are facing after their boys were involved in a tragic accident on July 30, a group of New Richmondites are organizing a benefit for the families. Josh Goodrich, Jordan Johnson and Zach Zajec died as a result of injuries sustained when the vehicle they were traveling in crashed into a stopped flatbed semi-trailer on Interstate 94. Shortly before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, St. Croix County deputies were called to a farm accident near 2943 County Road G in the town of Glenwood for a report of a man stuck in a round baler. Glenwood City EMTs and firemen and the deputies freed the man from the baler, but he had sustained fatal injuries as a result of being caught in the farm implement. The victim was identified as Walter Juneau, 47, of Glenwood City.
A Prairie Farm, Wis. man is dead following a one-vehicle accident in western Wisconsin on Monday, Aug. 20. The St. Croix County Sheriff's office responded to a crash at around 3:26 p.m. Monday on County Road G in the Town of Glenwood. According to the sheriff's department, a 1995 Ford LTL 9000 truck, driven by Steven J. Berends, 29, Prairie Farm, was westbound on County G when it left the roadway. A witness said the truck went into the south ditch and traveled approximately 100 yards before striking a tree. Berends had to be extricated from the cab of the truck.
Although Wisconsin is called the Badger State, the animal is actually quite rare. Two were recently found in the New Richmond area.
