Don Gilbert recalls then-Mayor Tom Redner appointing him to the Park Board in 1987 to get things done. The board had had endless discussions about expanding Lakefront Park to the north side of the dike road, but couldn't reach a consensus to get started on the project. Meetings would last until 11 p.m. or later. "They would talk about the color of flowers, but couldn't make any decisions to get going," Gilbert says.
For the second time within three months, two Hudson businesses have united to provide a Somerset homeless shelter with a vehicle. On July 30, Grace Place director Duana Bremer came to Rivercity Collision Centre on Rock Street in St. Croix Business Park to get the keys for the 2002 Dodge Caravan. Rivercity owners Dennis and Jodi Kennealy and Al Duchnowski of Hudson Insurance Agency had purchased the state of Wisconsin fleet vehicle after it was damaged in an accident.
Third Street and a portion of Laurel Avenue in Hudson will be closed to traffic beginning Monday, Aug. 13, for what could be three days of utility work. Dennis Christophersen, director of the Hudson Water Utility, said workers will be replacing a hydrant and upgrading a water main prior to the resurfacing of that portion of the street that will occur later in the summer. Christophersen said the street will close at 8 a.m. Monday and reopen at 5 p.m.

The Hudson City Council on Monday night approved plans to complete the floodwall in the south half of Lakefront Park and authorized the city staff to advertise for construction bids. Civil engineer Chuck Schwartz of Bonestroo & Associates estimated that it will take $260,000 to finish the project. It was halted last spring after officials discovered that portions of the wall installed the previous fall by WW Grading of Hudson had settled. The contractor reportedly denied responsibility for the problem, saying he had followed the construction plans given to him by former city Parks and Publi
Property owners along the St. Croix River just south of the Interstate 94 bridge are concerned about an infestation of Eurasian milfoil there, and hope local and state governments can be persuaded to do something about the problem. Mike and Michele Frost were relieved to find their house still standing when they returned from their annual vacation in northern Minnesota last month. They weren't as fortunate last summer. In 2006, their vacation fun ended with an early-morning call from neighbor John Richter, who told them that their spacious home on Crosby Drive was on fire. Michele sprang from bed when Richter asked her if the Frosts' daughters, Ashley and Crysta, and baby granddaughter, Ava, were in the house.
City Administrator Devin Willi confirmed Monday that the City Council has come to an agreement with the contractor that started building the new floodwall in Lakefront Park. Council members approved the settlement after discussing it behind closed doors at their July 16 meeting. The vote to accept a settlement offer from W.W. Grading came after the council had returned to open session. Willi said he didn't have a copy of the settlement yet and wouldn't say how much it is for. He said the agreement would be a public record as soon as he receives it from City Attorney Catherine Munkittrick.
The owner of a Madison management company that operates a number of assisted-living facilities around the state would like to make an empty Hudson condominium building into one. Rob Simonson of Apex Property Management Inc. spoke to the Hudson Plan Commission on July 26 about his plans for the vacant Vista Canyon building on Hanley Road across from St. Croix Business Park. A good deal of Simonson's presentation involved describing the services that are provided in a state-licensed residential care apartment complex.
Hudson will take its time deciding whether to annex 54 acres for a new big-box commercial development, judging from the discussion at a meeting of the city's Plan Commission. Commissioners agreed that they need to study the future of the entire Carmichael Road corridor between I-94 and Vine Street/County UU before recommending whether or not to bring the land into the city.
