It's clearer to me now. As a youth, I sometimes wondered how I ended up in such an intensely Christian home. Most of my people came from Sweden in the 1880s. My wife and I will be traveling there in a few weeks, at the end of a visit to Germany. That's how this journey of discovery began.
With the Lakefront Park beach in downtown Hudson closed because of high water and erosion from the June 21 storms, area residents might consider two St. Croix County parks as alternatives for swimming. Troy Beach is a lightly used county park on the St. Croix River, just south of YMCA Camp St. Croix on County F. What it lacks in amenities, it makes up for in setting. The park has an expansive sand beach that visitors can drive right up to. Giant cottonwoods shade the barbecue grills, picnic tables and parking area.

Hudson will increase its tax rate roughly 59 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value to pay for increased street repairs, equipment replacement and other capital spending needs, the City Council decided Monday night on a 5-1 vote. The increase in the city's share of the property tax bill will be about $118 for the owner of a $200,000 house and $177 for the owner of a $300,000. In return, city residents will get a stepped-up schedule of street maintenance and construction, something alderpersons say their constituents have been asking for.
Saint Croix Sailing School is going strong in its fifth season located at the corner of Buckeye and First streets next to Hudson's Lakefront Park boat launch. The first four week-long classes were mostly filled, but there are still some spots available in the remaining sessions. There's room for up to 24 students per class. The school runs through Aug. 16. "Skill, fun, safety and team-building for youth from the ages of 6 or 7 through high school is our main focus," says Tom Vandervort, a member of the nonprofit school's board of directors.
