The main goal of a Group Study Exchange trip that Hudson Rotarian Rob Howard led to the Czech Republic and Slovakia earlier this year was to further international understanding. And that's what happened, according to Howard. The five-member team from Minnesota and Wisconsin learned about and experienced the culture of the two countries during the tour from May 10 to June 8. And they shared what life is like back here in the Twin Cities area and Hudson. There are similarities - and differences.

The turnout for last Thursday night's community forum on the heroin crisis in Hudson caught even the organizers by surprise. Fifteen minutes before the program was set to begin, the parking lot of First Presbyterian Church was filled and cars lined the nearby residential streets. An estimated 460 people attended the standing-room-only event, titled "Heroin in Hudson: A Community in Crisis." The audience filled the church sanctuary, narthex and two overflow rooms. It spilled into the dining room, where people listened to the speakers through an audio hook-up.
The River City Chorale, comprised of 170 singers from Hudson and surrounding communities, gave its first concert of the 2013 summer season Monday night in the Hudson High School Auditorium. The second performance will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lakefront Park band shell. The title of this year's program (the chorale's fifth) is "Making a Joyful Noise." The musical selections center around "songs of joy and psalms," according to conductor Andrew Haase.
Rich O'Connor reluctantly became president of the Hudson Area Joint Library Board at its meeting on July 16. "I guess if nobody else will do this, somebody has got to do it," O'Connor said after Dave Ostby nominated him for the position. O'Connor, who has represented the city of Hudson on the eight-member board since November 2011, was the only person nominated, and elected with no opposing votes. He returned the favor to Ostby, a town of Hudson representative, by nominating him for vice president. Ostby was elected to that position without any opposing votes, too.

It's clearer to me now. As a youth, I sometimes wondered how I ended up in such an intensely Christian home. Most of my people came from Sweden in the 1880s. My wife and I will be traveling there in a few weeks, at the end of a visit to Germany. That's how this journey of discovery began.
