Clouds across parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin cleared just enough Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, to offer some a glimpse of a solar eclipse. The middle of the eclipse — when the maximum amount of the sun was covered — occurred shortly after 1 p.m. locally. Around 80 percent of the sun was covered. The eclipse spanned the country, with some areas experiencing complete blockage for more than 2 minutes. It was the first total solar eclipse in the continental United States in 38 years. A total eclipse will next occur over parts of the U.S. in 2024.
As students return to classes at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls next month, first-year students within the College of Arts and Sciences will find themselves tackling non-traditional topics as an introduction to their college career. With topics ranging from health claims to airplanes to doodling, First Year Adventure (FYA) is an innovative approach to university-level learning created to enrich students' minds and lives from their first days on campus.
The St. Croix County Health Department reports that a horse in St. Croix County tested positive for West Nile virus July 27. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection reported the positive test result to the Wisconsin Division of Public Health.
Anyone who purchased a ticket for the Aug. 2 Powerball drawing should probably double check their numbers. A winning $50,000 ticket was purchased at Family Fresh Market in River Falls, according to a news release from the Wisconsin Lottery.
Summer enters the home stretch this week, which means August has arrived and we're at the height of fair time. The St. Croix County Fair wrapped up in July, but people are still talking about it. Across the river, Washington County Fair runs Aug. 2-6 in Stillwater and then it is Wisconsin's turn again with the Pierce County Fair Aug. 10-13 in Ellsworth.
STILLWATER, Minn. — The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new St. Croix Crossing Bridge is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, on the Minnesota side of the new bridge. Governors and state and local officials from Minnesota and Wisconsin will be in attendance for the one-hour ceremony that is open to the public. Public parking will be at the old Fury Motors lot (Highway 36 and Osgood across from Walgreens), the Stillwater Middle School, and the Stillwater Area High School.
Pet supplier Chuck & Don’s is running its annual Raising Awareness campaign to benefit three Minnesota and Wisconsin based non-profit organizations: Pets Loyal to Vets, Leech Lake Legacy and Midwest Animal Rescue & Services (MARS). In Colorado, the campaign will support the Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment (C-RAD).
In the years leading up to 2014, police calls for service to retailers in Cottage Grove mainly came from two stores — Target and Kohl’s. Walmart threw open its doors in March of that year, immediately becoming the top source of calls for service in the east metro suburb, claiming a lead that has remained firm since it opened. “It’s become its own little city,” said Cottage Grove Public Safety Director Craig Woolery.
Thousands of people have responded to the emergency call for blood and platelet donations issued by the American Red Cross in early July, but there continues to be a critical summer blood shortage. The Red Cross has experienced a 30 percent increase in blood donation appointments through mid-July, according to a news release.
