St. Croix County's Transportation Committee and its highway commissioner are asking for a countywide vehicle registration fee to help pay for road maintenance. The proposed $10 per car fee -- which would require the drafting and adoption of a new county law -- would be collected along with the $55 annual registration fee charged by the state. "The Transportation Committee has been chewing on this for three years," said Highway Commissioner Tim Ramberg as he brought the proposal to the County Board last week.

After months of meetings, a consultant recommended last week that St. Croix County hold on to the northern quadrants of the Government Center property and look at marketing the southern quadrants. Dennis Welsch of Barsness Consulting Services said his company is suggesting that the county keep 47 acres for county operations and future expansion and convert 35 acres to new uses and public infrastructure improvements. Welsch gave his report during the County Board's May meeting, one of the few held in the evening. It was after 10 p.m.
After extensive discussion and on close votes, the St. Croix County Board voted last week (May 15) to endorse increasing state taxes on tobacco and beer. The tobacco tax resolution was adopted on a vote of 18-13.
A St. Croix County jury has awarded $110,000 to a woman who was allegedly abused and terrorized by her husband over the course of several years. Following a four-day trial, a 12-person jury found that Frank E. Stone had assaulted, battered and inflicted emotional distress on his wife, Roxann M.
