EAU CLAIRE — Firefighters from 15 departments throughout west-central Wisconsin agreed on the toughest challenge as they prepared for an upcoming state certification test: The ladder challenge was not going to be easy.
WESTconsin Credit Union is offering $1,000 scholarships for up to 13 graduating high school seniors from the class of 2018 as part of their scholarship program. The goal is to award one scholarship in each community served by a WESTconsin office. These areas include Altoona, Amery, Baldwin, Barron, Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire, Ellsworth, Hudson, Menomonie, New Richmond, Prescott, River Falls and Spring Valley. Scholarship recipients will be announced end of May 2018.
LA CROSSE — Rep. Ron Kind announced that his office is now accepting applications from individuals interested in attending one of our nation's service academies. Students must submit their applications by Friday, Oct. 20. "I am always impressed by the motivated, disciplined young men and women that seek to attend our nation's military academies," Kind said. "Each year I am able to nominate outstanding students from western and central Wisconsin to become our military leaders of the future, and I'm looking forward to meeting this year's applicants."
Minuteman Press in Hudson has been named the Central St. Croix Chamber of Commerce's Business of the Month for September 2017. Minuteman Press has been an active member since joining in 2009. The company was also awarded Business of the Year in 2013. They have been involved by sponsoring events, providing printing, hosting Java Jumpstarts, and attending events.
The East Metro Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce violinist Joan Molloy as its new concertmaster. Molloy served as guest concertmaster for "A Celebration of Finnish Music," the final concert in the orchestra's 2016-17 concert season, and returns as a permanent replacement for Michal Sobieski, EMSO's previous concertmaster, who retired last year. "I am happy to have been invited to work with EMSO and am looking forward to an exciting year together," Molloy said.

St. Croix County will hold the annual Clean Sweep Hazardous Waste Collection from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at the county highway shop located at 666 E. Highway 12, Hudson. Hazardous waste from farms and businesses who qualify as a Very Small Quantity Generator will be collected 9-11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6. A business or farm qualifies as a VSQG if it generates less than 220 pounds of hazardous waste per month and has less than 2,205 pounds of hazardous waste in storage.
The St. Croix Valley Shrine Club held their annual meeting Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the New Richmond Golf Club. President Jeremy Fussy, who was completing his two-year term, reported his goal during his tenure was to increase attendance and involvement in the Shrine. He asked for constant feedback from members and his goal was realized. The stag affair also heard reports on the Roadrunners, the upcoming Fall Festival, Little East West Shrine game and plans for the next MSA in Deadwood, S.D., in August 2018.
Westfields cardiac rehab program receives certification
Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz and their team are returning to Wisconsin. They plan to film episodes of the hit TV series "American Pickers" throughout the region in October. "American Pickers" is a documentary series that explores the fascinating world of antique picking on the History channel. The show follows Wolfe and Fritz, two of the most skilled pickers in the business, as they hunt for America's most valuable antiques. They are always excited to find sizeable, unique collections and learn the interesting stories behind them.
