Hudson Library Notes: Mary Moriarty Davis to retire
Mary Moriarty Davis has been the beloved children's librarian at the Hudson Public Library for almost 15 years. An entire generation has grown-up attending her special story times with singing, storytelling and her ever-popular puppet character, Baby Bear. Her creativity, warmth and gift for programming and storytelling has defined the spirit and character of our youth services department.
Her career in libraries started at the age of 16, at the Ottumwa Public Library in Iowa, which was right down the street from her home, where she quickly progressed from library page to manager. It was here she had her first foray into children's programming, working as the assistant to the children's programming consultant for the entire Prairie Hills Library System. She soon after landed her first children's librarian job in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Here she would single-handedly take on 5-7 programs per week, including a memorable 45-minute ad lib performance as Pippi Longstocking.
Mary and her husband Don (an editor and journalist) have moved 15 times in their years together. They've lived in Iowa, Illinois, Oklahoma, Wyoming, North Dakota, Minnesota and of course Wisconsin. Each move was marked by further professional development, as she was each time able to land positions working in libraries or in some way working in children's programming and storytelling. Some of her jobs were quite unique, like her gig at the Rock Pile Museum in Gillette, Wyoming where she introduced puppet shows to bring in classrooms of students.
The Hudson area is fortunate that Mary and Don finally landed here where she has gifted us with the many benefits of her far-reaching experience and talents. The community is invited to attend a retirement open house for Mary on Tuesday, Aug. 28 from 3-7 p.m. in the library lobby.
