Clear Lake hunter injured after Star Prairie teen fires gun

A 33-year-old woman was critically injured Sunday after being shot on private hunting land in Polk County.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office said the woman, of rural Clear Lake, was leaving a hunting stand at 7:15 p.m. when she was shot in a field by a 17-year-old boy from Star Prairie who was hunting on adjacent property.

The woman, who was hunting on her parents' land in the town of Clear Lake, was taken by ambulance to Amery Medical Center before being transferred to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. The sheriff's office said Tuesday she was in "critical but stable" condition."

The shooting is being investigated by the sheriff's office and the Department of Natural Resources.

Sheriff Pete Johnson said the shooting did not appear intentional but that investigators were working to determine if it was a reckless act. The boy was not taken into custody, he said.

"Obviously the shooter could face charges if it is determined that he was reckless in his handling of the firearm or intentional," Johnson said.
