HUDSON -- COVID-19 case activity in the county is still very high, after cases began increasing in March.

The county’s 7 day average of new cases is at 30, Epidemiologist Elle Klasen told the county board on Tuesday, May 4.

St. Croix County is one of only a few countries that have the very high case activity, Klasen said. Pierce, Polk Sawyer and Burnett are also in the same category.

Case numbers are rising in the 11to 17 year-old and 18 to 24 year-old age range. Vaccinations have led to less activity in the higher age groups, Klasen said.

The caseload comes at a time when the public health department had begun lowering staff. The department is still contacting every positive case by phone as well as close contacts.

With the very high risk level, the county public health department recommended limiting indoor gatherings to 10 people or less with physical distancing and outdoor gatherings to 25 people or less with physical distancing. Dining indoors at bars and restaurants is not recommended. The recommendation for outdoor dining is 25% capacity.

The county’s mask advisory is in place until June 6.  Recommendations for all risk levels include wearing a mask, physically distancing and washing hands.

Vaccinations hit milestones

The total number of county residents who have received at least one dose of vaccine has surpassed 40% of the population. The number of those who are fully vaccinated is now at 30%.

In the 65-plus age group, 85% have received at least one dose, and 80% are fully vaccinated.

This report doesn't take into account those that have been fully vaccinated with respect to indoor & outdoor gatherings. If you're fully vaccinated, the risk of spreading COVID or catching it, drops essentially to zeo.
