Somerset-area primary set for St. Croix County Board

Matt Foucault (left) and Ed Schachtner

Voters in St. Croix County's District 1 will go to the polls Feb. 20, where three candidates will be on the ballot, but only two will be seeking votes.

The Somerset-area primary will pit Matt Foucault versus Ed Schachtner. Candidate Chris Polfus is no longer seeking election, though his name will be on the ballot. He said he ended his candidacy because he plans to move out of the district in the foreseeable future.

Incumbent Ryan Sicard did not complete his filing paperwork and won't be on the ballot, according to the St. Croix County Clerk's Office.

Here are snapshots of Foucault and Schachtner, both seeking to move on to the spring election and represent the Somerset area:

Why would you like to serve on St. Croix County Board?

My wife and I relocated to Somerset 12 years ago to raise our family. We have watched Somerset make little change over these years with the anticipation of the St. Croix crossing. Development is occurring to the east and west but our elected officials have failed to recognize the need for change. For too long, Somerset and northern St Croix county have remained stagnant. We have failed to recognize the increased traffic flow, need for trails, parks and community amenities. I will listen to and work with the citizens of our area, both new to the community and those who have called this area home for many years. Together we can meet the needs of the citizens and maintain an area we can continue to call home.

Why would you like to serve on St. Croix County Board?

I have been on the Somerset Town Board for over 30 years. Town government works closely with county government on a number of topics. With my involvement, I think I bring a lot of experience and dedication to this office.
