Gymnasts shine at state meet

Freshman Paige Hillman finished 10th in the individual all-around and the Raiders finished seventh in the team competition at the WIAA State Gymnastics Championships in Wisconsin Rapids Friday and Saturday, March 2-3.

In Saturday's individual portion of the meet, Hillman just missed reaching the awards podium in the vault with a seventh place score of 9.267, one-half point away from sixth place. She posted the same score on the uneven bars to tie for eighth place and added scores of 9.233 on the balance beam and 8.85 in the floor exercise to give her a 10th place total of 36.617 in the all-around. Alexis Woida of Arrowhead won the all-around title with a score of 37.767.

Senior Taylor Owens capped off her high school career by tying for 13th place in the vault with a score of 9.033, while freshman Caroline Erickson finished 20th in the floor exercise with 8.817 and 23rd on the uneven bars with 8.6.

One day earlier the Raiders posted a team score of 137.4 to place seventh in the state team competition. Franklin/Muskego won its third straight state team title with 147.8333.

Hillman posted Hudson's top score of the day with a 9.367 on the uneven bars while Owens paced the Raiders in the vault with a 9.0. Hillman also had team-high scores of 9.0 on the balance beam and 8.917 in the floor exercise.

Senior Emma Newman, junior Maia Malchow, and freshmen Amber Robey, Katie Auge and Emma O'Neill also represented Hudson in the state team competition.

Bob Burrows

Bob Burrows has been sports editor at the River Falls Journal since 1996 and at the Hudson Star-Observer since 2009. Prior to joining the Journal, Burrows served as sports editor with Ledger Publications in Balsam Lake, Wis.
