What's going on at The Phipps? Teen, adult pottery on the wheel class for all levels
Teen, adult pottery on the wheel class for all levels
A Pottery on the Wheel class for all skill levels, beginning, intermediate and advanced, is open for enrollment. This eight-week class for teens and adults will be offered Mondays, June 17 through Aug. 12 (no class July 1), from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
The fee for this class is $229 and includes one 25-pound bag of clay, glazes and firing. Additional clay may be purchased from the instructor for $20 per bag, which includes glazes and firing. For each class, students are asked to wear clothes that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes, and to bring an old hand-towel and a sketchbook-type journal with pen or pencil.
Private violin lessons
Private violin lessons for students ages seven through adult are offered throughout the year.
Instructor Sarah N. Bertsch has taught violin and coached ensembles for more than 25 years. Previous positions include Northwestern College, Wooddale School of Music, Friendship School of Music, and Minnehaha Academy. She received her M.A. from St. John's University and her B.A. from St. Olaf College.
Bertsch has toured nationally with pianist Don Irwin and artist Fernando Ortega and has played concerts in Bulgaria, Romania, Macedonia, Japan and Guatemala. She has recorded with Sara Groves and a number of regional church music groups. Bertsch enjoys playing and teaching a variety of musical styles. She plays violin in the Oakdale-based global music group Ensemble Aventura and enjoys collaborating in Hudson with pianist Layton James. Bertsch often performs in weddings as a soloist or in one of her string ensembles.
"My teaching style is somewhat traditional (note reading, counting, intonation) and lessons are tailored to each student's ability and life context," Bertsch said. "I strive to make every lesson a positive experience, not just with violin, but with music in general, and also self-esteem. Learning violin is a wonderful challenge with rich rewards for students in many stages of life."

Oil paintings by Patty Voje in the galleries
A photography and mixed media installation by Laura Andrews and Erika Ritzel (both of Minneapolis), a mixed media installation by Nicholas Kovatch (St. Paul), paintings and magical objects by C.B. Murphy (Marine on St. Croix, Minn.), a mixed media installation by Kelly O'Brien (St. Paul), mixed media paintings by Samuel Robertson (Minneapolis), and alla prima oil paintings by Patty Voje (St. Paul) are featured in The Galleries through June 16.
Voje studied fine art at the University of Minnesota and earned her B.F.A. degree at Metropolitan State University, Minneapolis. She has studied with prominent national artists, including Qiang Huang, Mark Boedges, Joshua Been and Mary Pettis, and continues to study at the Atelier in Minneapolis.
"I paint in the alla prima style — a painterly approach: large brushes loaded with paint that is loosely, yet thoughtfully laid down. And therein lies the challenge of painting and why I love it so much."
In addition to her studio work, Voje is also an avid plein air artist. Compassionate living that supports the ethical treatment of animals is of fundamental importance to Voje, and it plays a significant role in her art. Her paintings illustrate the pages of "Great Animal Escape Stories" (2016), a book of true stories about farm animal escapes that promotes the cause of animal welfare.
"Edward Hopper famously said, 'All I want to do is paint light on the side of a house.' I often feel this way about farm animals. Nothing makes me happier than turning a corner and finding a well-lit cow in a field."
Voje has exhibited and been recognized nationally, including in 2018 alone: Boulder Plein Air Competition, Colorado (1st Place, Honorable Mention in Quick Paint); Minnesota State Fair Fine Art Juried Exhibit, St. Paul (Excellence in Content and Form Award); Montrose Plein Air Competition, Colorado (3rd Place); Artistry, Bloomington, Minn. (solo); and Banfill-Locke Center for the Arts, Fridley, Minn. (solo). She is affiliated with American Women Artists (Signature Member), Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, and Outdoor Painters of Minnesota. Voje's work is represented by Wantoot Gallery, Mineral Point, Wis., and Blue Awning Gallery, Port Washington, Wis.
The Galleries hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday noon to 4:30 p.m., as well as one hour before and through intermission of all performances in The Phipps theaters. The Phipps will be closed May 25-27 for Memorial Day.
