Hudson pastor column: Don't put a period where God puts a comma!
On Good Friday it seemed it was over for Jesus. This self-proclaimed messiah had been crucified. The disciples were confused, the Romans seemed to win. This Jesus movement seemed to be finished, over before it had really started. But Resurrection Sunday turned all of that upside down, or shall I say right side up! It was as if God was saying, "don't put a period where I place a comma." It's Friday, but Sunday is coming.
In 33 A.D. when Jesus was still walking around on the planet there were about 120 followers of Jesus Christ. Today, 2,000 years later, an estimated 2.3 billion people say, I believe Jesus Christ is who he said he was, he was the Son of God, he died for my sins, he rose three days later on Easter, he's coming back one day. 2.3 billion Christians!
What's amazing to me is that Jesus Christ never wrote anything down, he never wrote a book, he never wrote a letter, yet more has been written about Jesus Christ than any other person in all of history. Jesus never wrote any songs, he never composed any music. Yet, more music has been written about Jesus Christ than any other subject. Jesus Christ never built any buildings. Yet more buildings have been built in honor of Jesus to glorify Jesus than any other possible subject on planet earth. Nothing even comes close. Jesus never traveled more than about 200 miles from his hometown during his earthly ministry. Yet, today you can find followers of Jesus Christ in every nook and cranny of the planet.
What happened? The resurrection happened!! It is the single most important event in all of history. Everything is graded either A.D. or B.C. based on the event of the resurrection. I ask myself, how did Christianity grow so far and so fast from just 12 guys on the back side of the desert, to 2.3 billion people today who claim to believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. What made those first Christians so contagious that the Good News message of Christ spread like wildfire all around the world? What happened you ask? The resurrection happened. It transformed these scared and fearful disciples into courageous world-changers!
The resurrection proved three things:
• That Jesus is who he claimed to be, the son of God and the Savior of the World.
• That Jesus has power over death and the grave.
• That Jesus does what he promises he will do.
May the reality of the resurrection captivate your heart and transform your life like it did for the first century disciples!
Praise be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 1:3
