The Gopher and Badger states fare well overall when it comes to education, according to Intelligent.com.

More than 56.4 million students are enrolled in schools throughout the United States.Intelligent.com conducted a survey to assess the best states for educating these students -- from preschool to college. 

The study was conducted by finding metrics related to performance, safety, community investment, class size, and attendance through all 50 states.

Minnesota and Wisconsin made the best list and each had a top 5 ranking in a specific category.

  1. New Jersey

  2. Massachusetts

  3. Connecticut

  4. Minnesota

  5. Wisconsin

Top 5 worst states

  1. New Mexico

  2. Mississippi

  3. South Carolina

  4. Louisiana

  5. Idaho

Top 5 for academic performance

  1. Massachusetts

  2. New Jersey

  3. Connecticut

  4. Wisconsin

  5. Virginia

Top 5 for safety

  1. Rhode Island

  2. New Jersey

  3. Minnesota

  4. West Virginia

  5. Hawaii
