Area athletes medal at state track meet

Athletes compete at the 2013 WIAA State Track and Field Championships Friday, May 31, in La Crosse.

River Falls' Mitch Lenneman and Trent Powell both reached the awards podium in the boys' 1600 meter run and Hudson's Taylor Steffen took home a medal in the girls' shot put at the 2013 WIAA State Track and Field Championships in La Crosse Saturday.

Lenneman and Powell both broke the River Falls' school record in the 1600 meter run to finish fourth and fifth, respectively. Lenneman crossed the finish line in 4 minutes, 14.42 seconds while Powell was clocked at 4:14.77. Less than one second separated the second through fifth place finishers.

Tiano Pupungatoa was the only other Wildcat boy to score team points, finishing seventh in the discus with a throw of 153-feet, 2-inches. The Wildcat boys finished 23rd out of 54 teams that scored at the meet.

Steffen finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 39-feet, 5.25-inches while Raider freshman Miranda Miller took eighth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:18.92. Hudson's girls finished 42nd out of 65 teams.

Bryan Caffin had the highest finish for the Raider boys, finishing 13th in the discus with a throw of 142-10.
