Raider fall sports in full swing

We haven't even hit the dog days of summer yet, but student-athletes at Hudson High School are already gearing up for their respective fall sports seasons.

The Raider football team was the first to hit the field for its inaugural practice last Monday, Aug. 1. Hudson will participate in a five-team scrimmage with River Falls, Osceola, Bloomer, Prescott and St. Croix Central this Friday, Aug. 12, in Osceola before opening the season against Greenfield on Thursday, Aug. 18, at Breitenbach Field in Middleton.

The Raiders follow up their neutral site season opener with three straight road games -- at 2015 state runner-up Arrowhead Friday, Aug. 26, at Eau Claire North Friday, Sept. 2, and at Superior Friday, Sept. 9, before their home opener Friday, Sept. 16, against Menomonie.

The Raider girls' tennis and girls' golf team teams held their first practices this past Monday, Aug. 8. The netters will open their season at the Eau Claire North Invitational this Saturday, Aug. 13, while the golfers will begin play Monday, Aug. 15, at the Eau Claire North Invitational at Mill Run Golf Course.

The girls' swim team, under new head coach Madeline Hoe, has been practicing since Tuesday, Aug. 9, and will hit the water for its first competition at the Eau Claire Invitational Saturday, Aug. 27.

The first day for volleyball, boys' soccer and cross country practice will be Monday, Aug. 15. The Raider volleyball team opens its season at the Marshfield Quad Tuesday, Aug. 23, and the soccer team kicks off Thursday, Aug. 25, at Woodbury while cross country is off and running Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Eau Claire North Invitational.

Bob Burrows has been sports editor at the River Falls Journal since 1996 and at the Hudson Star-Observer since 2009. Prior to joining the Journal, Burrows served as sports editor with Ledger Publications in Balsam Lake, Wis. A native of Bayonne, N.J. and a U.S. Navy veteran, Burrows attended Marquette University before completing his studies at UW-River Falls in 1992.
