Baseball: Raiders win playoff opener

Jack Erickson threw six innings of shutout ball and ninth-seeded Hudson scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning to defeat No. 8 Superior, 1-0, in a WIAA Division 1 baseball regional semifinal Tuesday, May 29, in Superior.

The lone run of the game came when Luke Healy reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on an errant pick-off throw, went to third on Teddy Donna's sacrifice fly to right and scored when David Miller's hard grounder skipped past the Spartan second baseman.

Healy then took over for Erickson on the mound, and other than a two-out walk, struck out the other three Spartans he faced to secure the Raider victory.

Erickson worked out of a two-out, two-on jam in the bottom of the sixth inning to keep the game scoreless. He finished with four strikeouts and two walks while allowing four Spartan singles.

David Miller had a third-inning double for the Raiders but was left stranded, and Hudson loaded the bases in the fourth when Elijah Rude reached on a one-out error, Ben Gilbert singled to right and Jack Klementz reached on an infield single. But Superior pitcher Brandon Wing got a strikeout and a flyout to end the inning.

The game was delayed an hour due to thunder and lightning at the end of the fourth.

The Raiders advanced to face top-seeded Eau Claire North in a regional final Thursday, May 31, at 1:30 p.m. at Carson Park in Eau Claire.
