River Rats top Hubbers

The Hudson River Rats took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth inning, then tacked on five more in the eighth, to post a 9-3 victory over the Ellsworth Hubbers in a St. Croix Valley Baseball League game Friday, June 21, in Ellsworth.

Matt Schwechler singled in Brent Blegen to tie the score in the sixth before Connor Grant drove in Chris Dent to give Hudson a 4-3 lead.

The Rats broke the game open with five runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Jason Hollar. Grant also picked up an RBI with a bases-loaded walk and Luke LeMay singled in a run while Mitch Lewis added an RBI sacrifice fly.

Blegen hit a solo home run in the fourth to tie the score 1-1 and LeMay tripled and scored on a groundout by Hollar in the fifth to make it a 2-2 game before Hudson took the lead for good in the sixth.

Blegen finished with three hits in the win and LeMay and Dent had two each while Hollar drove in three runs. Sam Glade worked the first six innings to earn the win on the mound, allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Ronnie Donley struck out six and gave up three hits in three innings of scoreless relief.

Hudson, now 3-3 in SCVBL play, 5-10 overall, will visit Carson Park in Eau Claire Friday, June 28, for a non-league game against the Eau Claire Cavaliers before a pair of league games Saturday night, June 29, at Menomonie and Sunday afternoon, June 30, at Spring Valley.
