WIAA State Hockey: Raiders roll in opener

Aaron Squires and Cole Danielson scored two goals each as Hudson used a three goal second period to beat St. Mary's Springs, 7-1, in a WIAA Boys Hockey State Tournament quarterfinal game Thursday, March 1, at Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Danielson scored his first goal 10 minutes into the game and Bennett Schrank banged home a rebound three minutes later to give Hudson a 2-0 first period lead.

The Raiders broke the game open in the second period, starting with senior Joe Martin scoring his first goal of the season at the 2:42 mark. Squires scored on a wrister from the right circle less than a minute later and netted his second goal midway through the period before St. Mary's Springs scored its only goal of the game to make it 5-1 after two.

Carter Maack put home the rebound of a shot by Danielson midway through the third period and Danielson scored on a breakaway with under four minutes remaining to make the final 7-1.

Raider goalie AJ Cohen made nine saves as Hudson outshot St. Mary's Springs, 38-10.

The Raiders will face Verona in a state semifinal game Friday, March 2. Verona defeated Green Bay Notre Dame, 4-1, in their quarterfinal matchup.
