Girls Hockey: Raiders nipped in holiday tourney opener

In a game that didn't see the first goal scored until four minutes remained in regulation, the Raider girls' hockey team came out on the short end of a 2-1 overtime decision to Apple Valley in the first game of the Burnsville Holiday Tournament Wednesday, Dec. 26, in Burnsville, Minn.

It's the second overtime loss in three games for Hudson after losing 3-2 to the Fox Cities Stars last Friday, Dec. 21.

Wednesday's matchup with Apple Valley was scoreless through 47 minutes before the Eagles struck on their second power play opportunity of the game with four minutes remaining.

Hudson pulled goalie Alayna Kushner and the ove paid off when Sydney Hendricks scored the tying goal with 26 seconds remaining with assists from Bailee Dierks and Dani Robson.

But the Raiders were whistled for third third penalty of the game 6:20 into overtime and Apple Valley capitalized 30 seconds later to escape with the 2-1 win.

Hudson came up empty on three power plays in the game while Apple Valley was 2-for-3. Kushner finished with 25 saves as the Raiders outshot the Eagles 29-27.

Hudson, now ?-?, will face Park of Cottage Grove in the second game of the tournament Thursday, Dec. 27, before wrapping up play Friday, Dec. 28 against host Burnsville.
