Boys Hockey: Raiders Schwan's Cup champs

Carter Maack's goal in the fourth round of a shootout Hudson gave Hudson the win over St. Michael-Albertville in the Schwan's Cup Silver Division championship game at Ridder Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota on New Year's Day.

Maack's goal came after the score was tied 3-3 after 51 minutes of regulation and eight minutes of overtime and after seven straight misses by the two teams in the shootout. It gave the Raiders their second consecutive Schwan's Cup title after winning the Bronze Division championship last year on the way to their second consecutive WIAA state title.

Technically the game goes down as a tie, moving Hudson's season record to 6-3-1. St. Michael-Albertville, which advanced to the Minnesota Class 2A state tournament last season, fell to 7-3-1 this season.

The Raiders took three one-goal leads in the game, only to see St. Michael-Albertville come back to tie it each time.

Sam Ross scored the only goal of the first period, on a power play assisted by Harvey Dove and Maack, before the Knights tied the game at the 5:11 mark of the second period.

Hudson retook the lead when Cole Danielson scored off a rebound at 8:33 with assists going to Max Giblin and Kolton Prater but St. Michael-Albertville tied it again at the 12:24 mark.

Payton Hanson's wrist shot with 1:33 remaining in the period, assisted by Bennett Schrank, put the Raiders back on top, 3-2, but St. Michael-Albertville scored the only goal of the third period at the 7:50 mark to force overtime.

Neither team found the back of the net in the eight-minute overtime and Hudson goalie A.J. Cohen stopped the Knights first four attempts in the shootout. But the Raiders also came up empty on their first three shots, setting the stage for Maack to end the contest on the Raider's fourth attempt.

Cohen finished with 31 saves in 59 minutes of action as the Knights outshot the Raiders 34-32.

After 10 straight road games to start the season, the Raiders will finally play at home when they host Rice Lake (0-9-0) Thursday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m. at Gornick Arena.
