Softball: Raiders win playoff opener

Fifth-seeded Hudson put four runs on the board in the first inning and Sydney Gabriel struck out 14 batters in six innings of work as the Raider softball team posted a 6-1 victory over No. 12 Wausau East in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal Tuesday, May 21, at Grandview Park.

The Raiders scored four runs on three hits, an error and a hit by pitch in the first inning and Paige Meyer stroked a two-run home run into the wind in right field in the second to stake the Raiders to a 6-0 lead. Gabriel, meanwhile, allowed just one hit, a one-out double in the top of the fourth, while striking out 14 of the 19 batters she faced without a walk. Hannah Stich allowed an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts in the seventh inning to make the final 6-1.

Gabby Sommers had a two-run single in the first and Stich and Avery Johnson drove in a run apiece to give Hudson an early lead.

The Raiders advance to take on No. 4 seed Wisconsin Rapids in the regional final Thursday, May 23, in Wisconsin Rapids.
