Tennis: Netters advance 5 to sectional

Hudson will send three singles players and a doubles team to the WIAA Sectional this week in Eau Claire following subsectional play Monday, Oct. 1, in Menomonie.

Ella Diedrich, at No. 1 singles, Sophia Jonas at No. 2 and Lauren Stolzman at No. 3 all advanced and will be joined by the No. 3 doubles team of Morgan Miller and Rose Giblin.

Diedrich needed to win just one match at No. 1 singles to move on and did just that, taking care of Madisen Myer of Superior, 6-0, 6-0.

Jonas defeated Megan Pukla of Eau Claire North, 6-0, 6-0 in her opening match before beating Olivia Leipnitz of Menomonie, 7-6 (4), 6-3, while Stolzman swept Superior's Jill Reuille, 6-0, 6-0, and New Richmond's Ariana Devereux, 6-1, 6-1 to advance.

Miller and Giblin won their opening round match, 6-0, 6-1, over Chloe Adams and Maria Friedel of Chippewa Falls before beating River Falls' Taylor Kasten and Olivia Bell, 7-6 (4), 6-0.

Rylee Swenke came up short of advancing at No. 4 singles with a second round loss to Lauren Flaschenriem of Menomonie, 6-2, 6-0. Swenke started the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Madison Sislo of Superior.

The No. 2 doubles team of Laura Douglas and Quinn Winkoski also won their first round match, beating Chippewa Falls' Sammie Riedel and Maddie Schmidley, 6-1, 6-0, before falling to Kerrigan Storie and Sydne Hahn of New Richmond, 6-2, 6-3.

Hudson's No. 1 doubles team of Anni Lewis and Kate Johnson suffered a 6-3, 7-6 (2) first-round loss to New Richmond's Katey Eickhoff and Anna Hop.

The top four finishers in flight 1 and the top finisher in flight 2 at Wednesday's sectional tournament in Eau Claire will automatically advance to the WIAA State Tennis Tournament Oct. 11-13 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. An additional 16 singles players and doubles teams from the eight Division 1 sectionals will be added to the state tournament field by the WIAA seeding committee.
